The Latest (ARG): Glorious Ruins – Hillsong

Nothing says “glorious” quite like the legacy of worship that the beloved Hillsong Live has delivered faithfully for generations. The name has been a household favorite for as long as many younger listeners can remember. The group’s song roster penned by the group stretches over two decades, sporting titles from “Power Of Your Love” to “Cornerstone”. After what seems like an eternity of success, the single-minded, worship-focused Hillsong crew has remained unchanged.

July 2nd, 2013 marked the international release of the team’s twenty-second live record, Glorious Ruins. The album continues what fans have come to expect from Hillsong Live. They perfectly display their ability to never stop evolving their music into a fresher, newer, and, like brother band Hillsong United, more synth-driven, worship experience for all who tune in; Glorious Ruins sports twelve such anthems, ranging from the foot-stomping rock feel of “Always Will” to the lulling tune, “To Be Like You” to the joyful, “God Who Saves”. The album contains several songs that reminiscently retain elements from the group’s previous works. A major gem of the record, however, is the title track’s rousing declaration:

“Let the ruins come to life
In the beauty of your name
Rising up from the ashes
God forever you reign
And my soul will find refuge
In the shadow of your wings
I will love you forever
And forever I’ll sing…”
Isaiah 58:11-12 gives a parallel:

“And the LORD will continually guide you,
And satisfy your desire in scorched places…
Those from among you will rebuild the ancient ruins;
You will raise up the age-old foundations;
And you will be called the repairer of the breach,
The restorer of the streets in which to dwell.”

With nearly every lyric intertwined with scripture, it’s very near-absurd to say Glorious Ruins falls short in any aspect; despite an obvious leaning towards synth-rock musical patterns, Hillsong Live’s latest record invites the audience into a God-glorifying audible venture like no other.
